What you should know: The local chapter of the Freecycle movement is a bustling place. You can offer any of your reusable items through the website, so long as you’re willing to part with it for free. We’ve seen everything from patio stones to tables, champagne flutes, clocks, photo albums, even unwanted personal care products (that haven’t been opened)! The site is a great alternative to selling things through Kijiji and other sites. You help people avoid buying products, and you don’t have to deal with the hassle from scammers or negotiating because it’s all free. Who knows, you might pick up some items too.

3. Castro Valley Buy Nothing Group

What they accept: Anything someone might want

What you should know: The general Buy Nothing groups encourage people to reuse each other’s stuff instead of buying it! This local page for Castro Valley is a little different. With community events, safety tips, resources, and reviews, it’s a great spot to get a lot of community connection. You’ll also be able to bounce thoughts off other savvy donors and shoppers to help you offload old stuff and find new trinkets for free.

4. El Cerrito Recycling Center

What they accept: Electronic waste, recyclable materials, and many items that are difficult to recycle, including some appliances. See below for details.

What you should know: What about those items that you can’t just donate or that someone else wouldn’t be interested in? The El Cerrito Recycling Center is your best all-around recycling options. They take everything from classic recycling materials like glass, to unusual materials like bicycles.

Here is a quick list of some of the items that the center accepts that you may not be able to find other options for:

• Exercise equipment
• Eyeglasses

You should know that the center does not accept appliances that have Freon in them. This includes air conditioners and refrigerators.

5. The Hayward Animal Shelter

What they accept: Blankets, towels, pet items including canned food and litter, tables, containers, harnesses, and more items on their wish list.

What you should know: While you might have rare occasions to give away old pets’ things, it’s great to be able to give them to pets that are in need when you can. The Hayward Animal shelter is currently the closest shelter to Castro Valley as our own shut down. They accept a limited amount of used items, but they are a very great option for getting rid of old linens and towels. The animals always need to snuggle!

6. Savers

What they accept: Household items, including small furniture and appliances.

What you should know: You have to hop over to Dublin to get to a Savers but it can be worth it. Savers will accept a huge range of household goods that you may want to drop off. They will turn around and sell it to a nonprofit to distribute it, unlike many of the other places on this list. However, it may be worth it if you just want to offload some things.
